Reaching out to Karen for help designing my “Her Helm” fine art portrait book was one of the best things I could have done for my book. Her creative genius saw into my thoughts and then came up with something that perfectly reflects how I want people to feel when holding this book. From the beginning, she was supportive and professional, and had brilliant methods to get me to describe my goals so that she could do her magic. It was an iterative process to create the final design, which was absolutely stunning. The cost of hiring an experienced designer was more than worth it. The entire book, inside and out, looks amazing due to her skills and I’m grateful for everything she has done to elevate my book.

Creating a Book for Kristin Rutkowski Featuring the “Her Helm" Project

We’ve worked with Karen on multiple large-scale design projects such as annual reports and national research reports. In every instance, Karen has kicked off the work with strong conceptual presentations that demonstrated her deep understanding of our field and of our thought leadership goals when it comes to design. Karen then remained flexible and open to feedback throughout the entirety of the design and editing process, making it easy for us to coordinate changes and improvements. We especially appreciate how fast Karen works and her close attention to detail to ensure copy accuracy throughout multiple rounds of edits. Our entire team knows and trusts Karen to deliver on-brand work that elevates our visual presence among our partners, influencers, and other key audiences.

How We Work

Kickoff Meeting / Research Project Mood Boards

We will have an in-depth discussion about the organization, target audience and primary competitors. Following this initial research discussion, mood boards will be created and presented.

Present Mood Boards / Initial Design Rounds

Initial project concepts and styles will be created using feedback Kickoff meeting and from the mood boards. The primary project design will dictate the needs of any secondary designs.

Designs Finalized / Final Project Design Hand-Off

After receiving feedback from multiple rounds of the initial project concepts, a primary design and any requested secondary projects will be created. Once the client approves projects, files will be sent to the client or printer, which may involve paper selection and press checks.

My first book was photographs I made back in my home state of Arkansas half a century ago. Ms. Lomax helped me through the agony of the unknown, which was how my first book would eventually turn out. Thanks to her attention to detail and creative talent, it turned out beautifully. I offer my congratulations to those who select her to work on their projects; she is at the top of her game.

I was introduced to Ms. Lomax through a friend. She was incredibly easy to work with and provided exactly what we wanted and then some, despite our vague descriptions. She has an innate ability to decipher what the client really wants and needs and then delivers quickly and with top-notch quality.

Discover the Top 10 Essential Insights on Book Design Every Self-Publisher Should Grasp Before Taking the Plunge

Cover Design: Your book cover is the first thing readers will see, so it needs to be eye-catching and representative of your content. Invest time or resources into creating a compelling cover.

Typography: Choosing the right fonts for your book is essential for readability and aesthetics. Ensure your fonts are legible and appropriate for your genre and target audience.

Images and Illustrations: If your book includes images or illustrations, ensure they are high quality and properly formatted for print and/or e-books.

Consistency: Maintain consistency throughout your book regarding formatting, fonts, and design elements; this creates a cohesive reading experience for your audience.

Chapter Openers and Headings: Designing attractive chapter openers and clear headings can enhance the overall visual appeal of your book and make it easier for readers to navigate.

Margins and Bleed: Understanding printing requirements such as margins and bleed is crucial to ensure your book prints correctly and looks professional.

Interior Design Elements: Pay attention to page numbers, footers, and other interior design elements. These may seem small, but they contribute to the overall professionalism of your book.

Accessibility: Make sure your book is accessible to all readers by considering factors such as font size, contrast, and formatting for those with visual impairments.

Printing: Consider the variations in printing techniques, papers, inks, and materials, as well as selecting the most suitable printer to align with your book's budget, timeline, and desired quality.
