As Art Director for a prominent weekly political magazine, I was tasked with a profound challenge—conceptualizing a cover story that delved into the nation-shaping impact of the 1963 Kennedy assassination. This seismic event left a fractured landscape.

Undaunted by the weight of this subject matter, I saw an opportunity to craft a design that would transcend mere words on a page. I envisioned a conceptual illustration that could encapsulate the shattered ramifications of that day.

With a skillful hand and a keen artistic vision, I aimed to create a visual narrative that would resonate with readers.

This graphic needed to clearly portray not only the divisions in the country that were ultimately set off by this profound event but also its violence and damage. Because it was a weekly print publication with a 48-hour turnaround time, there was no wiggle room on the deadline and no time for multiple rounds of review and revision.

I knew exactly what image I wanted to create as soon as the editor presented the article's premise: a bullet's impact in Dallas radiating damage throughout the country and politically reducing it to 'red and blue' states, parties, and positions. I designed the cover story illustration and carried it through to the layout, incorporating imagery of brokenness and fractures into the title's typography and the callout box. Visualizing my illustrations, headline typography, and layout, the reader could immediately understand and feel the gravity of the article's assertions.

Of course, I can't just stop at the layout design; I created this custom number design for the TOC page.
