Logo Design for a Nonprofit Coalition
LOGO DESIGN
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
CREATIVE DIRECTION
I was thrilled to be contacted by a newly formed coalition of nonprofits advocating for quality nutrition and ending hunger in children.
This project was to represent a cohort of nonprofits, so multiple people would be involved in the approval process, and I only had the mission to direct me – i.e., no input on what the final result should look like.
Secondary Logo Designs
Beginning with a blank slate, creatively speaking, to design a new logo is one of my favorite ways to work.
This nonprofit, the Child and Student Nutrition Alliance, is dedicated to elevating the importance and urgency of robust federal investment in the highest-quality nutritional standards and fully funded programs to eliminate child and student hunger.
First, I decided to make the image a ‘mark’—the design version of a drawing—of a schoolchild that would be nonspecific to visually represent students in general and eliminate any impression of race or gender. I also wanted the student to appear to be moving forward, as if excited to go to school. Continuing the school nutrition theme, I designed the backpack to mimic an apple.
I chose green as the primary color because it represents healthy foods. This shade is vibrant and energetic, which is what we all want kids to be, and nutrition is critical. The secondary color is purple, which is the opposite of green. Using contrasting colors makes each more prominent and noticeable.
I recommend designing logos in just two colors for various reasons. Keeping it in two colors is especially useful for nonprofits, as printing collateral like event invitations is less expensive. As always, I provided secondary logos in black and white for single-color use.
