Designing a Cookbook Down to the Sprayed Edges

SELF-INITIATED CONCEPT • VEG FORWARD • COOKBOOK
Veg Forward cookbook concept cover: a single full-bleed vegetable photograph under clean bold typography, designed by Karen Lomax, LOMAXcreative.

The cover. One photograph, clean bold type, zero clutter: the whole book's promise in a single glance.

A note on the name: I coined Veg Forward early in this concept, and while I was working on it, a real cookbook by the same name was published by Susan Spungen, whose work I follow and warmly recommend. This concept is unrelated to her book.

THE PROBLEM

This one is mine. Books are where my career started and where my heart stays, so I set myself a brief: design a cookbook concept that shows everything an experienced book designer brings to the table that a self-publishing author might never think to ask for.

THE APPROACH

The cover is a single beautiful photograph under clean, bold typography: no clutter, no doubt about what kind of book this is. Recipes are organized and color-coded by season, and those colors extend to sprayed page edges and the folios, so finding a section is as satisfying as reading one. The end sheets carry an original vegetable illustration in bright green, reappearing softened behind the title page, because blank end sheets are a missed opportunity. The sample recipe page uses sectioned typography for easy following and a call-out box for leftover ideas, a detail that serves the cook and sells the book. I even designed the Instagram launch posts, because no book launch is complete without them.

THE OUTCOME

A portfolio concept that puts my full toolkit on display: photography judgment, illustration, typography, and the production details (sprayed edges, end sheets, folios) that elevate a book from printed to crafted.

The end sheets. An original vegetable illustration in cheerful green, softened again behind the title page: no surface wasted.

The launch posts. Instagram-ready designs, because a concept book deserves a concept launch.

Process note: Details like sprayed edges and illustrated end sheets are exactly the decisions self-publishing authors rarely know to ask about, and exactly where a book earns its place on the shelf. This concept exists so clients can see those decisions made, not just described.

How We Work With Authors and Photographers

A book is the most personal thing we design, and we treat it that way. We start with a discovery session and mood boards to put words and images to what you want readers to feel, then design the cover and interior as one object. Twenty years in the print industry and thousands of pieces sent to press stand behind every job, so we can guide you confidently through the decisions self-publishing rarely prepares you for: paper stocks tested with your actual images, linen and foil and deboss options priced honestly, binding that suits how the book will be handled. We speak your printer's language and manage proofs and press checks through delivery, so the book in your hands matches the one in your head.

Planning a book?

Thirty minutes, no obligations. We'll talk about your images, your materials wish list, and what it takes to hold the book you're imagining.
