CASE STUDY / DIRECT MAIL + COLLATERAL

Designed to Be Opened:
A Die-Cut Mailer for Corporate Directors

NACD • DIRECT MAIL • MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

The folder, closed. A short fold in contrasting brand blue and yellow, with a belly-band effect closed by a reusable non-tearing sticker.

The National Association of Corporate Directors needed a direct-mail piece to grow membership among a famously discerning audience. The folder-and-booklet package had to do three things at once: make an instant impression that got directors to open it, stay understated enough to feel credible, and fit nonprofit bulk-mail size limits.

THE PROBLEM

I started with scissors, not software: hand-built paper mockups to work out the shape, the folds, and how the piece opens and closes. Once the structure was right, I moved to Illustrator for all of the design and color. The final folder uses a short fold, with the front panel slightly shorter than the back. NACD's signature blue and yellow make the piece recognizable at a glance, so it reads as NACD in the mail stack before any logo or copy does the work. The piece has the look of a belly band closed by a reusable, non-tearing sticker. Angles and arrows echo the brand's logo throughout and steer the reader's eye. Inside, the interior shifts to brand yellow so the reader knows they've entered a new section, the way a cover gives way to a first chapter. I checked the final design against my Galaxy gauge for mailing compliance and specified clear envelopes so the piece starts working before it's opened.

THE APPROACH

A membership mailer engineered for its audience and for the mail stream: die-cut, bulk-mail compliant, and impossible to mistake for another envelope on the desk.

THE OUTCOME

Hand-Built First

PAPER-AND-SCISSORS MOCKUPS BEFORE ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR EVEN OPENED

Die-Cut + Short Fold

ENGINEERED TO INVITE OPENING AND HOLD THE BOOKLET SNUG

Bulk-Mail

MEASURED TO NONPROFIT MAILING REQUIREMENTS TO THE MILLIMETER

Clear Envelopes

THE DESIGN STARTS SELLING BEFORE THE PIECE IS OPENED

Scope also included: booklet cover and interior layout, concept development, creative direction, photo editing, and complete pre-press.

Inside the folder. Brand yellow interior with an angled pocket: angles from the logo repeated as a quiet navigation system.

The booklet. Angled quote backgrounds, arrow bullets, and globe imagery echoing the 'world-class boards' language of the copy.

The clear envelope. Mailed in clear mylar so the design sells itself at the mailbox; no opaque envelope to toss unopened.

Process Note: Direct mail is a physical product with legal dimensions, and the difference between a beautiful comp and a mailable piece is measured in millimeters. Building the folder by hand first, then verifying the rendered die-lines against the gauge, meant the die-cut concept survived contact with bulk-mail requirements instead of dying in production.

How I Work With Communications Teams

Most engagements begin with a manuscript: Word files, statistics, photo folders, and a brand guide. I build the design system around your content's structure, turn your data into publication-quality graphics in your brand, and manage edits through clearly versioned rounds so nothing gets lost between drafts. On the production side, I bring twenty years in the print industry and thousands of pieces sent to press. I speak your printer's language, spec the job so it prints the way it was designed, and manage estimates, proofs, and press checks through delivery, holding costs on budgets large and small. Fixed launch dates are treated as fixed.

Planning collateral that has to work harder?

Thirty minutes, no obligations. We'll talk about your audience, your budget, and what the piece needs to accomplish.
